The Joy of Joeys

JUST SAY  NO......... to Over-Breeding, Flea Market breeders, & Glider Mills,...Please help us save our Suggies! A Reputable Breeder/Rescue will ask a lot of questions of you, and will allow full access to where their gliders are.  How they care for their gliders can effect the health, temperment and longevity of your new family member. Doing your homework before you buy will help you to have a long and happy life with your new pet!

This page is for educational purposes, and not intended to be a guide to breeding. Joeys are amazing and so adorable, but the work, love and heartache that comes with the birth of a Glider can often be overwhelming.
For everyone wanting to learn about how these amazing marsupials come into this world, please enjoy what I call the Joy of Joeys.

If you have a joey in pouch you can start to see joey parts poking out of the pouch a couple weeks to days before the joeys will make their full appearance. Usually a tiny tail will peek out, and then a hand or foot. We love to play with their tiny little toes even before the joey is born. No matter how curious you are, NEVER LOOK INTO OR REACH INTO A GLIDERS POUCH! YOU COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INFECTION OR DEATH!
The Glider Mama will give us the next clue that she is ready to show us their new joeys when they sing.  We use the term OOP or "out of pouch" to let people know we are referring to the date the joey was actually out of the pouch. A joey needs to be with its parents for several weeks before weaning, but we handle our joeys from the moment they are out of pouch. It is so important to begin the bonding process as soon as Mama will allow it

GLIDER BIRTH...Happy Birthday Sydney

Sugar Glider Joeys are born as tiny as a cooked grain of rice. They are pink, hairless and sticky with small arm buds and dark circles where their eyes will be. They crawl up a slippery path to the pouch that Mama has licked for them. If they leave this path, they can get stuck in Mama's fur and will likely die. This process takes only minutes. Once in pouch, they latch on to one of four nipples and their jaw will close around it. The nipple swells and the joey will not be able to latch back on if it lets go of the nipple. It takes about 80 days from birth to coming out of pouch.

A handful of love

Sugar Gliders are social animals who live in large groups called Colonies. The wonderful and amazing thing about Sugar Gliders is they raise their joeys together. The male will help to raise the joey and will watch his joey while mom goes to eat and play. I have seen Cinnabon deliver food to Savannah while she was nursing a joey. They snuggle together and even sleep with their arms around eachother. I feel so lucky to allow them to let me in as part of their family. To have something so small trust you so completely is an amazing thing.

QUICK FACTS ON JOEYS
*Joeys are born the size of a cooked grain of rice
*At birth they are blind, hairless, and have tiny leg buds
*Joeys of different ages can be in the pouch at the same time
*Joeys will stay in the pouch for about 55 days or so.
*Gliders typically have one or two joeys at a time.
*Mom and dad BOTH raise their joeys together.
*Parents have an active roll in their joeys learning.
*Hand raising a rejected joey is very difficult and they often don't make it.
